Understanding Insight Scans

How We Measure Nervous System Health at Early Beginnings Chiropractic

At Early Beginnings Chiropractic, we talk often about getting to the root cause of symptoms rather than guessing or chasing surface level problems. In our last blog, we discussed why we order lab work, what those labs tell us, and how they guide a more personalized approach to care. Today, I want to walk you through another essential piece of how we evaluate healing and progress: Insight Scans.

Insight Scans are a foundational part of our new patient exam and ongoing care. They allow us to objectively measure how your nervous system is functioning, how your body is responding to stress, and whether the care you are receiving is creating meaningful change.

This information matters because chiropractic care is not just about getting adjusted. It is about improving how your body functions over time. If we are not tracking change, we are guessing. Insight Scans remove the guesswork.

What Are Insight Scans and Why Do We Use Them?

Insight Scans are non-invasive nervous system scans that we perform during your new patient exam and then every twelve visits throughout care. This allows us to establish a baseline, track progress, and adjust your care plan as needed to ensure you are getting results.

These scans are completely safe for everyone, including pregnant women, infants, and children. There is no radiation involved. This is not an X-ray. We are simply measuring how the nervous system is functioning through three key markers:

  1. Heart rate variability, which measures adaptability to stress
  2. Skin temperature along the spine, which reflects brain body communication
  3. Muscle activation patterns in the postural muscles, which show how hard your body is working just to hold itself upright

Together, these scans give us a clear picture of how your nervous system is handling daily life, stress, and healing.

Heart Rate Variability: Measuring Adaptability to Stress

The first scan we perform measures heart rate variability, often referred to as HRV. During this scan, you rest your hand on a small pad for about three minutes while we measure how your heart responds to subtle changes. This gives us an adaptability score.

Adaptability is one of the most important markers of nervous system health. It tells us how well your body can shift between stress and recovery. When adaptability is low, people often experience fatigue, anxiety, poor sleep, hormone imbalances, and slower healing.

Parents often ask how we do this scan with babies and children. For infants and younger children, we use gentle ear or finger sensors. For children who struggle to sit still, we can shorten the scan time and still gather valuable information. In nearly every case, we are able to complete this scan successfully by the second visit.

This scan gives powerful insight into how a child is processing their environment. It helps explain behaviors such as hyperactivity, sensory overwhelm, emotional dysregulation, and difficulty settling or sleeping.

Thermal Scans: Understanding Brain Body Communication

The second scan is the thermal scan. This involves gently rolling a small device along the spine to measure skin temperature. Temperature differences along the spine reflect areas where communication between the brain and body is not functioning optimally.

This scan takes only a few seconds and is extremely comfortable. Most kids play with a toy or read a book while it is done. For children who feel unsure, we let them touch the scanner first so they understand it is gentle and safe.

What we look for is pattern. Areas of imbalance tell us where the nervous system may be under stress and how long that stress has likely been present. This information guides where and how we adjust.

One area we pay special attention to is the upper neck, where the vagus nerve exits. The vagus nerve plays a major role in digestion, breathing, heart rate, immune response, and emotional regulation. Dysregulation here can be connected to colic, reflux, torticollis, plagiocephaly, dysautonomia, POTS, and more.

Patterns in thermal scans can also give clues about where stress originated, such as from an assisted birth or C section.

EMG Scans: How Hard Is Your Body Working?

The third scan is the surface EMG, which measures muscle activity along the spine. This tells us how much effort your body is using just to maintain posture.

For adults, this often explains chronic tension, headaches, neck pain, and back pain. It can show whether certain muscles are overworking while others are underactive.

For children, EMG scans reveal asymmetry and imbalance that may affect coordination, balance, and sensory processing. These patterns are especially helpful when a child cannot yet communicate pain or discomfort.

Parents often feel deeply validated when scans confirm what they already sensed. Something is not quite right, even if their child cannot explain it. The scans help us see what is happening beneath the surface.

Tracking Progress and Creating Real Change

Insight Scans are not a one time test. They are a progress tracking tool. We scan at the beginning of care and then every twelve visits to ensure that the nervous system is changing.

Our goal is not perfection. Our goal is improvement. We want to see patterns shift, stress decrease, and adaptability improve. Often, scans change before symptoms fully resolve. This provides reassurance and motivation to continue care, especially during the healing process.

When scans improve, symptoms such as colic, reflux, bedwetting, sleep issues, and emotional regulation often follow.

This approach allows us to make informed decisions and ensures that your care is working.

Why Baselines and Re-Checks Matter

At Early Beginnings Chiropractic, everything we do is based on baselines and re-checks. Whether we are looking at labs, scans, or clinical progress, we always measure, adjust, and reassess.

This is how we know care is effective. This is how we avoid guessing. And this is how we help families move from surviving to thriving.

When families receive care together, progress often happens faster. That is why we offer complimentary family checks for a limited time when one family member begins care. It allows the whole nervous system environment of the family to improve together.

Taking the Next Step

If you are curious about your nervous system health or your child’s, Insight Scans are a powerful place to start. They provide clarity, validation, and direction. Healing becomes less overwhelming when you can see progress and understand what your body needs.

Our goal is always to educate, empower, and support you so that you can feel better, function better, and live with more energy and confidence.

When you are ready, we are here to help your whole family begin that journey together.
