VBAC and Chiropractic Care

How to Prepare Your Body, Baby, and Birth Team

March is all about chiropractic care and pregnancy, and there’s no better place to start than one of the most empowering topics in birth: VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).

If you’ve had a previous C-section, you may have been told your options are limited. But the truth is, many women go on to have successful, beautiful VBACs and with the right preparation and support, your chances can be incredibly encouraging.

This topic is especially meaningful to me. My first birth was a cesarean, followed by three VBACs, each one unique, powerful, and deeply transformative. From a hospital VBAC to an unexpected home birth, and ultimately a planned home birth, I experienced firsthand how preparation, support, and nervous system regulation can completely change your birth experience.

What Are the Real VBAC Success Rates?

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, which can feel overwhelming.

Research shows that for many women, VBAC success rates are similar to (and sometimes even higher than) first-time vaginal births. And if you’ve already had a vaginal birth (either before or after your cesarean) your chances of a successful VBAC increase even more.

But statistics don’t tell your whole story.

Your individual health, preparation, and support system play a far greater role than any generalized number.

Key Factors That Support a Successful VBAC

While every pregnancy is different, there are several foundational pieces that can significantly impact your VBAC journey:

1. Maternal Health

Your overall health going into pregnancy matters. This is why preconception care is so important. Supporting your body before pregnancy, sets the stage for everything that follows.

2. Pelvic Alignment & Mobility

A balanced, mobile pelvis creates the ideal environment for baby to move into the best position for birth.

This is where chiropractic care and pelvic floor therapy are essential, especially if you’ve had a previous C-section. Addressing scar tissue, tension, and alignment early can make a significant difference.

3. Baby’s Positioning

Optimal fetal positioning (head down, properly aligned) is a major factor in labor progression and VBAC success.

4. Labor Management

Low-intervention, physiologic labor supports your body’s natural ability to birth. Understanding your options and preparing ahead of time is key.

5. Your Birth Team

Having a provider who supports VBAC is critical. Not all OBs approach VBAC the same way, which is why asking the right questions matters.

Midwives, doulas, chiropractors, and pelvic floor therapists can all play a powerful role in building a supportive, aligned team.

How Chiropractic Care Supports VBAC

Chiropractic care was one of the biggest contributors to my own VBAC success and it’s something I recommend to every expecting mom, especially those planning a VBAC.

Pelvic Balance & Alignment

The pelvis is the foundation of your baby’s environment. When it’s balanced:

  • Muscles are relaxed
  • Ligaments are not pulling unevenly
  • Baby can settle into the ideal position

This reduces the likelihood of complications and supports smoother labor progression.

Nervous System Regulation

Your nervous system controls everything, from hormone release to muscle coordination during labor.

When your body is regulated:

  • Hormones communicate effectively
  • Labor can begin naturally
  • Your body can respond and adapt more efficiently

This is especially important when trying to avoid induction, which can increase risks in VBAC scenarios.

Stress Reduction

Pregnancy places a significant demand on your body. Chiropractic care helps reduce tension and stress, allowing your body to function in a more calm, adaptable state, something that directly impacts your birth experience.

Building Your VBAC Support System

VBAC success isn’t just about your body, it’s about your environment and your support.

Consider including:

  • A Webster-certified chiropractor – I am one!
  • A pelvic floor physical therapist
  • A doula for labor and postpartum support
  • A VBAC-supportive provider
  • A comprehensive birth education class – we offer these at Early Beginnings!

Inside our birth classes, we cover:

  • The natural physiological birth process
  • Medical interventions and informed consent
  • Labor techniques and positioning
  • Postpartum recovery and newborn care

Don’t Forget the Foundations: Movement & Nutrition

Simple, consistent habits can make a huge difference:

  • Daily movement and mobility exercises
  • Nutrient-dense foods (not just calories)
  • Proper hydration and rest

These support your energy during pregnancy, endurance during labor, and healing postpartum.

You Deserve Support in This Journey

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, pregnancy and postpartum are seasons that require care, guidance, and support.

VBAC is not just possible, it can be an incredibly empowering experience when your body is prepared, your nervous system is supported, and your team is aligned with your goals.

If you’re considering a VBAC and want to feel confident moving forward, we’re here to help.

Let’s build a plan that supports you, your baby, and the birth experience you’re hoping for.
