Is Your Child’s School Anxiety More Than Just Worry?

As the school year comes to an end, many families are counting down the days until summer break. But for some children, these final weeks of school can feel incredibly overwhelming.

School anxiety is more common than many parents realize, and in younger children it often doesn’t look like anxiety at all.

Most adults think anxiety means excessive worrying, panic attacks, or a child telling us they’re nervous. But children often communicate stress through their behaviors instead.

What Does School Anxiety Look Like in Kids?

For children in kindergarten through middle school, anxiety can show up in surprising ways:

🍎 Frequent tummy aches before school

😢 Emotional meltdowns before or after school

🚫 Refusing to go to school

😴 Shutting down, appearing tired, or falling asleep

📱 Wanting excessive screen time after school

✂️ Nail biting, hair pulling, thumb sucking, or skin picking

📚 Difficulty concentrating on schoolwork

Many parents hear “My tummy hurts” every morning and wonder if their child is really sick. While digestive issues can certainly play a role, anxiety often shows up through the gut because of the powerful connection between the brain, nervous system, and digestive system.

What’s Really Happening?

When a child is struggling with school anxiety, their nervous system may be stuck in what’s called “fight or flight” mode.

Instead of recognizing school as a safe environment, their body interprets it as a threat.

This can create two common responses:

Fight

This may look like:

⚡ Emotional outbursts

⚡ Aggressive behaviors

⚡ Defiance

⚡ Frequent meltdowns

Flight or Freeze

This may look like:

❄️ Avoiding school

❄️ Refusing assignments

❄️ Shutting down

❄️ Difficulty engaging in class

❄️ Wanting to escape through screens

The challenge is that these behaviors are often misunderstood. A child who appears defiant may actually be overwhelmed and a child who seems lazy may actually be stuck in a stress response.

When children don’t understand why they’re reacting this way, they can begin to believe they’re “bad kids.”

Nothing could be further from the truth.

How Anxiety Impacts the Whole Body

A nervous system stuck in stress mode affects far more than emotions.

Parents may also notice:

😴 Difficulty falling asleep

🌙 Frequent night wakings

😠 Reduced emotional regulation

🤒 Frequent illnesses

👂 Recurring ear infections

📉 Difficulty concentrating

📚 Falling grades

💔 Reduced confidence
