The Perfect Storm

In recent years, we've observed a concerning increase in chronic illnesses among children. Conditions such as ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Autism, and Sensory Processing Disorders seem to be on the rise. Today, we'll explore the factors contributing to what we call "The Perfect Storm" affecting our kids' well-being.

The 3 factors that contribute to “The Perfect Storm” are:

  1. Birth trauma

  2. Prenatal & stress during pregnancy

  3. Early Use of antibiotics & medications

At the forefront of The Perfect Storm is birth trauma, all of which include experiences like induction, manual assistance, forceps, vacuum, and c-sections. The delicate bones of the skull, upper neck, and spine play a crucial role in protecting the nervous system—the body's vital control center. Any injuries or alterations during birth can impact functions such as controlling nerves and muscles for breastfeeding, digestion, fluid drainage from ears and sinuses, sensory processing, motor development, milestones, tone, balance, and speech development.

Aside from birth trauma; prenatal and maternal stress, along with early use of antibiotics and medications, contribute significantly to this Perfect Storm. Fortunately, many parents are beginning to consider medications as a last resort.

Navigating The Storm:

Interestingly enough, the Perfect Storm has a sequence, and it’s important to know that your kiddo wont “grow out” of something, but they’ll “grow into” something else.

Here is the sequence of The Perfect Storm:

  1. An infant dealing with fussiness and sleep challenges

  2. A toddler facing constant sickness and antibiotics

  3. A wound-up, hyperactive, impulsive, emotional child

  4. A grade-schooler struggling to focus, facing social and emotional challenges

  5. A teenager experiencing exhaustion, anger, and anxiety

Action Steps:

When it comes to solutions to this Perfect Storm, the one thing that needs to get done is find the root cause and address it. When there are subluxations in the upper neck, then the stress response in your body can get turned on and get stuck.

(Subluxation is just a fancy chiropractic word meaning there is a misalignment within the spine which causes neurological interference)
